Top Tips to Keep Your Hair Healthy This Summer

The coming of summer is the promise of sunshine, fiercer rays and plenty of humidity. As much as you need sunscreen to protect your skin from sunburn in the outdoors, you need to consider protecting your hair too.

Summer is great, but can be tough on your hair

When summer comes, formerly sleek and shiny hair can lose lustre and look dull.

This is because the sun's UV rays are capable of damaging your hair cuticle. The latter is the outermost layer of your hair, and it grows rough when atmospheric humidity increases.

The result is frizzy hair. When this happens, your hair dries up, losing most of its natural oils and moisture, making it vulnerable to breakage.

In addition, constant sweating can make your hair lose its fullness.

This isn't to say that summer is a dreadful time for hair. There are solutions, and with diligent adherence to the right hair care techniques, you'll be able to maintain your full, lush and sleek hair throughout the summer heat.

Trim your hair

It's a good idea to begin the season with a good trim. This way, you can refresh your looks and eliminate split hair ends.

Hair grows really fast in the summer, and it's important to be mindful of this.

Protect your hair from direct sunlight

As earlier emphasized, the sun's UV rays literally fry your hair, giving the tops a bleached, dull and dry look.

Ensure to apply the right hair products, especially the kinds that have UV filters. This way, you'll be protected from sun damage. And if you have colored hair, it won't bleach.

Another alternative to this is to wear wide-brimmed hats.

Avoid hot hair treatment

If you regularly visit the hairstylist to blow dry or curl your hair with hot and flat irons, you'd do well to reduce the frequency during the summer.

Instead, make a habit of washing your hair and braiding it into a ponytail before you go to bed each night. Upon waking, it'll look full and healthy.

Combat frizz

Frizzy hair is dry, dull and prone to breakage. Condition your hair regularly with anti-frizz serum to help it keep it's lustre and shine.

You can also use a tiny bit of argan oil products.

Reduce the washing frequency

When you wash your hair frequently in the summer, it loses its natural oils quicker. In turn, this signals your body to make up for the deficit by producing even more oil.

The end result is that you feel the need to do more washing.

The solution to this is to use natural dry shampoos rather than normal shampoos.

This will help you to go longer without needing to wash your hair.

Alternatively, you can treat your hair to witch hazel, applying it with a cotton ball to dissolve any excess oils.

Drink lots of water

Water is the solution to many body problems, as it does therapeutic wonders.

This also applies to haircare.

Drink at least three litres of water daily, and remember to consume foods that help maintain healthy hair and boost growth.
